About us

We are built around a simple belief:

Math is hard—and that's exactly what makes it fun.

Rather than making math easier by lowering expectations, Poppy & Pi will make mathematics more accessible by providing structure, breaking concepts into manageable pieces, and giving students repeated opportunities to experience success.

What is being taught

We will be using a framework for our lessons consistent with the Common Core for Mathematics (CCSS-M), supplemented by the NCTM approach to mathematical reasoning and problem solving.

Common Core has a bad reputation and for good reason. In many professional development sessions and during my college years, right at the beginning of the roll-out of the Common Core, as a conceptual way of teaching. A student would see the same units/topics just extended each year with mastery expected after so many exposures over the year with a focus on varied teaching strategies that developed the why behind math, but was vastly different than the way previous generations had been taught.

So, why are you using this as the basis?

At the height of the Common Core in 2011-2012, 45 states fully adopted the Common Core Standards. Only four states never adopted these standards: Texas, Virginia, Alaska, and Nebraska.

Of the states that adopted the standards many have only revised, renamed, or tweaked their standards and dropped the official name "Common Core" because of the bad reputation. However, the underlying core concepts—focusing on critical thinking, evidence-based writing, and conceptual math—remain embedded in most modern state academic frameworks. Making the Common Core Standards the most logical to assist as many students, families, and support staff as possible.

Founder and Academic Director

“The only thing I ever wanted to be was a teacher. I wanted to make a difference, do good, help others do math. Slowly after the course of 10 years in various teaching settings and leadership roles, I burned out because I felt like a failure. Students hated math and became actively defiant to engage with the most basic of skills. It was shocking to me that many of the skills I taught to my 5th were the same skills that my 12th graders struggled with, and with very limited opportunities to reach them where they needed help the older they became.

Looking back, the year I saw the most success with my students was when I had set up a tutoring program after school for free. I would stay behind assist those who needed it and even recruit students who needed service hours for other clubs. And so here I am, trying to encourage without the constraints of a classroom.”
